Hot on the heels of the 2013 Pathfinder and 2013 Nissan Altima, the next-generation 2013 Nissan Sentra has finally made its debut this week. The new car shows off revised exterior and interior designs, which Nissan promises will offer “class-above style” compared to the rest of the segment, as well as the outgoing compact car. Below, we pick apart the Sentra’s redesign. Will this new look help the Sentra gain a stronger foothold in the cutthroat compact sedan class?
Undergoing a transformation much like the new Altima’s, the 2013 Sentra also grew in size compared to the previous generation. The redesigned compact is 2.3 inches longer and sits on a 0.6-inch longer wheelbase, though overall width is narrower by 1.2 inches. With the new dimensions, the car has a shorter front overhang, but the most obvious changes can be seen in the headlights, which feature the same kink seen on the new Altima.
The arrow-shaped headlights have an LED light strip on the bottom, and look much sleeker than the fat, squarish headlights on the outgoing car. The front grille is also dramatically different. Although it keeps the same basic trapezoidal shape, it appears much more pronounced as the sides have been pinched in more. The black-painted center on the outgoing car gives way to an all-chrome center, while the surrounding chrome frame stays in place. Foglight housings on the lower front fascia are also entirely new.
Viewing the car from the side, the beltline appears to be lower, and a new character line connects the front fenders to the wraparound LED taillights in back. Chrome door handles replace the previous-gen car’s body-colored pieces, and chrome trim outlines the windows. The passenger door is also angled off, as is the rear passenger window behind the C-pillar. The new Sentra’s bubbly greenhouse has also been smooshed, giving it a lower and more aggressive-looking profile. Also visible from the side is an extended rear overhang, thanks to the car’s longer wheelbase.
The biggest changes out back are new taillights, which flank a more stretched out and rectangular rear end. The chrome bar that sits above the license plate surrounds has been elongated, and new reflectors on the outer edges of the lower rear fascia complete the changes.
Updates to the interior add to the Sentra’s renewed look and feel, with more upscale-looking materials used throughout the cabin. The center stack has received a touchup, with the HVAC vents relocating from the sides to above the central information display.
Do you think the 2013 Nissan Sentra has changed for the better? Will the enhanced look lure sales away from the likes of the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below.
Last week, reactions to the 2013 Land Rover LR2 were split down the middle. 02eclipse said, “Revolting. Not the worst SUV ever, but it’s not very good looking at all!”
On the other end of the spectrum, Jc said, “I actually like it; it’s all about the new headlights, and it looks pretty nice. The interior is a little too sophisticated, but the outside is really refreshing.”
Others couldn’t point out the differences, like alex, who said, “Wait, what’s different? It looks good, but what’s different?”
