We’ve paid so much attention to the upcoming (and gorgeous) BMW 3 Series wagon that we almost forgot about this: the 3 Series Gran Turismo. This variant has surfaced a few times during the past year, and a test mule was recently caught wearing just a few pieces of camouflage.
That means BMW will be unveiling the GT sooner than later. Like its larger sibling, the 5 Series GT, it casts a unique shadow, highlighted by its rounded roofline that’s slightly higher than the sedan. While the 5 Series GT’s rear end has been cause for much controversy, BMW insiders have promised a more elegant and attractive execution on the 3 Series. The tester’s front end reveals design cues similar to the 3 Series sedan, but expect the GT to sport a few distinguishing characteristics.
Powertrain choices should also mirror the sedan. A 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder will serve as the base engine, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with 300 hp will be optional. Both engines should be paired to an eight-speed automatic, with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system offered as an option.
It’s no secret that the 5 Series GT hasn’t quite been the sales superstar that BMW had hoped for, mostly because Americans haven’t warmed up to its quirky styling. Will the 3 Series GT, essentially a carbon copy of its larger sibling, meet the same fate?
