If the Alfa Romeo and Mazda collaboration has even half the success of Toyota and Subaru‘s collaboration on the FR-S/BRZ, it would be no surprise that more than one sports car will come as a result.
Back in May, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed his interest in expanding the relationship with Mazda beyond just one car and it appears that Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi shares the same sentiments. The first project between the automakers will result in a new Alfa Romeo sports convertible based on the Miata, and all parties involved are already thinking about the future.
“We want to achieve success with the MX-5 and Spyder project first,” Yamanouchi said. “We can learn more about each other and see what opportunities exist.”
On paper, this relationship could prove to be more successful than what came from Toyota and Subaru. Fiat has the economies of scale to help the Japanese automaker, while Mazda has the engineering expertise to build a worthy sports cars in today’s era.
