Chevrolet Volt, Sonic, Cruze, and Spark Post Record Sales in August

While sales superstars like the Chevrolet Volt stand out in General Motors’ August sales report, the same can’t be said for full-size SUVs like the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Traverse. For the month of August, the Chevrolet Volt, Sonic, Cruze, and Spark all posted record sales.

The Chevrolet Volt may finally be getting traction in the U.S., with sales of 2831 units marking the car’s best-ever monthly sales performance. Through the first eight months of August, 13,497 Volts have been sold. The Cruze compact beat that number in August alone, with 25,975 units sold, a 19.1-percent increase over August 2011. The Sonic also performed well, with 8703 sales and 2630 Sparks sold, taking Chevrolet’s subcompact total over 10,000 units in August.

GMT900 SUVs including the Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL were all down at least 30 percent, and the Chevrolet Traverse crossover was down 40.2 percent, with 6743 units sold. The GMC Canyon dropped 56.3 percent, possibly due in part to the GMC brand’s 35-percent decrease in fleet sales for August. Sales of the nearly identical Chevy Colorado, however, rose 66.8 percent. The Corvette also performed well, rising 29.3 percent to 1210 units, with the Impala up 28 percent to 17,066 units, more than 2000 sales above the Malibu.

The Buick Regal, which for the 2013 model year gets standard eAssist on all base models and an available automatic transmission on the high-performance Regal GS, had an off month in August. With 2072 units sold compared to last year’s 3820, sales dropped 45.8 percent for the compact luxury sedan.

And GM as a whole…? What about Cadillac?

if the guys in charge of GM were smart enough to have put the $23 of emmisions equipment on the volt from the get go….. it would have had CA carpool access from the beginning and never been such a tremendous failure.
