Far from being the most exciting car to show up in a set of spy photos, the 2014 Suzuki SX4 small crossover will split from its current platform which it shares with Fiat to become its own car.

By the time it hits the market, the new SX4 will be a welcome change to what is otherwise a very dated-looking car, but that might not even matter. The company’s sales are limping along in North America with little hope of maintaining a competitive edge.

While the SX4 will continue to see life here, there seems to be less and less hope for the company’s American sales future because of an aging lineup and slumping sales. In these photos we can see that the brand will restyle the car significantly with sharper lines to update its look. The taillights also look to be new, with a much more aggressive aesthetic.

Still, the car keeps its “tall wagon” body which hasn’t been popular in the past but is starting to gain more attention overall. Cars like the Mercedes A-Class, for example, are making strides to take that body shape from drab to desirable, though it will be up to Suzuki to fall in line with a restyled car that doesn’t look hideous.
