Four new cars have just aced Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing to earn the Top Safety Pick designation, including the 2013 Acura ILX entry-level luxury sedan plus the 2013 Scion FR-S and 2013 Subaru BRZ sports coupes. Also on the list is the 2013 Ford Escape crossover, which could use some good news after another recall involving a fire risk was recently announced.
Each of the 2013-model-year vehicles earned the IIHS’ top award by scoring a “Good” rating in the moderate overlap frontal, side, rollover and rear impact tests. None of the vehicles, however, appear to have been evaluated with the new small overlap front test. The IIHS began the new test after a 2009 study showed that these types of crashes accounted for about a quarter of injuries or fatalities for front-seat occupants.
It comes as no surprise that the 2013 Acura ILX earned a Top Safety Pick, since the small Acura is based on the new Honda Civic sedan, also a Top Safety Pick. The 2013 Scion FR-S and 2013 Subaru BRZ were developed together by the two automakers, which accounts for both small sports coupes earning the IIHS award. The all-new Ford Escape improves on the last-generation model, which only earned a “Marginal” rating for roof strength in rollover crashes while the hybrid model had earned a “Poor” rating in the same test.
