Land Rover Defender: sprucing up old faithful for 2013

Land Rover’s stalwart Defender reaches its third decade in service next year, and it’s showing no signs of stopping until 2015, when the new Defender arrives. Having been given a substantial set of improvements to the specification levels last year, including the introduction of a 122 hp and 360 Nm 2.2 litre EU5 diesel mill, it’s now the turn for cosmetic enhancements to help spruce up the old lady for 2013.

Over in the UK, buyers wishing for more than the usual fare now have three additional options to pick from, with new premium part-leather front seats – replete with LR logo on the backrest – leading the way.

The in-car entertainment system has also been upgraded (yes, like me, you might be wondering why). The base audio system for the Defender already has a single-slot CD player with USB and Auxiliary connections, with an optional audio upgrade available for Bluetooth connectivity with remote microphone.

Now, one can add an optional, Alpine-branded Hi Line 150 watt low profile subwoofer system into the mix, with 10 cm coaxial speakers replacing the standard units.

The third option consists of new contrast roof colours, which can now be chosen against the majority of the Defender paint palette. And there’s a choice of two new exterior body colours as well, these being Barolo Black and Havana.

Elsewhere, things remain unchanged, with the Defender continuing unabated, available in 14 separate body styles, three different wheelbases and in both standard and heavy-duty guise.
