The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced four new inductees to the Top Safety pick list: the Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, Ford Escape and Acura ILX.
The 2013 Scion FR-S, and its identical twin the Subaru BRZ, got top marks in all categories tested. The IIHS found that the drivers survival space was well maintained after the crash and no intrusion was made into the drivers area. Safety features on the cars include side airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights.
The same goes for the 2013 Ford Escape, which scored top marks in every test conducted. This shows that the redesign that came to the vehicle in 2013 made the crossover safer, as the 2009 through 2011 Ford Escape only scored a “marginal” rating for vehicle roof strength, making it bad in a roll-over situation.
The 2009 through 2011 Escape also had issues with forces on the right foot that were high enough to indicate the possibility of an injury, whereas the 2013 model does have this problem.
The 2013 Acura ILX scores perfect in almost all categories, only faulted for forces on the right shin bone that could lead to lower leg injuries during a crash.
