Acura won’t waste any time with the new NSX supercar. Not long after the highly anticipated NSX hits showrooms, it will head to the track to compete in GT form. That means that if the hybrid supercar is offered as a 2015 model, we could see an Acura NSX GT racer as soon as the 2014 calendar year.
Thanks to Honda Performance Development, the Japanese automaker’s research and development subsidiary that focuses solely on racing, an NSX racer could be a serious contender on the track, as HPD vice president Steve Eriksen told SpeedTV.com that the Acura NSX was meant to be raced, though various series regulations will determine where the automaker focuses its efforts.
Right now, the Grand Am GX division makes the most sense for the NSX. Though the Grand Am and ALMS series are about to merge, the current GX class permits alternative-fuel engines of under 4.0 liters, which would make the hybrid supercar a perfect entrant with its 3.7-liter V-6 and three electric motors. Eriksen, on the other hand, suggests that Le Mans would be a great place for the NSX to “show its prowess.”
Currently, ACO GTE rules don’t allow for hybrid systems. But then again, it’s unclear at this point whether the NSX GT racer will even be a hybrid.
