Thread of the Day: Is the Porsche Cayenne Diesel the Best Cayenne Variant?

The Porsche Cayenne SUV is the German automaker’s best-selling vehicle. Perhaps it’s because buyers have a variety of flavors to choose from, so whether they’re after speed or fuel efficiency, one Cayenne variant is sure to whet their appetite. With the arrival of the oil-burning Cayenne Diesel, the task of choosing just one gets trickier.

With its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 cranking out 240 hp and 406 lb-ft, Porsche claims it will reach 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Sure, it’s not as racy as the Turbo, but most buyers don’t drive an SUV to race it, but to haul cargo and passengers, or to tow. With big SUVs, though, usually comes small mpgs. That’s not the case with the Diesel, though, which is estimated to get 19/29 mpg city/highway, compared to the 16/23 mpg of the Cayenne V-6 with an automatic and the 20/24 mpg of the Cayenne S Hybrid.

“Steering feel is smooth and alive; body motions are well-controlled by the optional air suspension; and grip is higher than you can safely explore on a public road,” we write in the Cayenne Diesel First Drive. “Yes, it’s actually fun to gun the Diesel through a sweeping funnel of asphalt.

The $56,725 Cayenne Diesel it is also the second-most-affordable model in the range. What do you think: Is the Porsche Cayenne the best Cayenne variant or would you pick another option? Give us your thoughts in today’s Thread of the Day, and don’t forget to read the full review here.
