Video Find: 2014 Mazda6 Uses 2012 Mazda6 Sedans as Stunt Doubles

What do you do when the star of a film is unavailable to be filmed? This is a question Mazda faced with the first promotional video for the 2014 Mazda6 sedan, which was officially unveiled last month. Since filming began months before the sedan debut, a drivable car wasn’t ready. What you see in the video, then, is a 2012 Mazda6 sedan acting as a double for the 2014 four-door – the wagon was recently previewed ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut.

The trickery, however, is quite cool and involves high-tech Hollywood tricks such as computer-generated imagery (CGI). The process is nothing new for those well-versed in filming with CGI. But for the newbies out there, we highly recommend Mazda’s excellent primer on how it all works, which is explained in a captioned photo gallery posted on the automaker’s Facebook page.

The commercial was shot at the Bonneville Salt Flats, which has no shortage of breathtaking scenery. And if you happen to be a fan of cellists, Mazda commissioned not just one, but two master cellist, Tina Guo and Rushad Eggleston.
