Toyota Avalon Sports Model Rumored Send us your Tips! MANUFACTURERS BY REGION Vehicle Types Shows and Events Motorsports Aftermarket Lifestyle

If the Alfa Romeo and Mazda collaboration has even half the success of Toyota and Subaru‘s collaboration on the FR-S/BRZ, it would be no surprise that more than one sports car will come as a result.

Back in May, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed his interest in expanding the relationship with Mazda beyond just one car and it appears that Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi shares the same sentiments. The first project between the automakers will result in a new Alfa Romeo sports convertible based on the Miata, and all parties involved are already thinking about the future.

“We want to achieve success with the MX-5 and Spyder project first,” Yamanouchi said. “We can learn more about each other and see what opportunities exist.”

On paper, this relationship could prove to be more successful than what came from Toyota and Subaru. Fiat has the economies of scale to help the Japanese automaker, while Mazda has the engineering expertise to build a worthy sports cars in today’s era.

Tan Sri Azman Yahya: we interview Team Sime Darby Auto Performance’s gentleman racer

Tan Sri Azman Yahya is far from a stranger to motorsports. A seasoned competitor in the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) and Merdeka Millenium Endurance (MME) races, where he emerged winner of both in 2004, the 48-year old entrepreneur definitely has racing in his blood.

Recently, Sime Darby Auto Performance, the official Porsche importer in Malaysia, announced its racing debut and named Azman as its driver. He will compete in Rounds 7 and 8 of this year’s Porsche Carrera Cup Asia (PCCA) – race day is tomorrow, Sunday.

We caught up with him at the Sepang circuit for a short chat only days before his track battle with 28 other 911 GT3 Cups virtually similar to his, and he was cool, collected and smiling, despite having yet to meet his race engineer! Naturally, we were curious about his early motorsports career and how he started.

“I did a lot of track days in Batu Tiga in those days,” said Azman, who is also Motorsports Association of Malaysia chairman. “I used to ride bikes, but that stopped in 1994 after a big crash. Interestingly, I don’t remember anything about that crash – I lost consciousness!”

It does take a lot, as you can imagine, to return to the world of racing after such an experience. But six years later, after Sepang opened, he raced for charity at the MME, finishing fourth and raising over RM200k. He has been racing at our national racetrack ever since.

Having driven on Silverstone and Palmer circuits in the UK, Sepang remains a favourite. “It (Sepang) is more modern and technical in places, particularly Turns 12 and 13.” He also cites Turns 5 and 6 as challenging for him. All four turns make up fast S-bends at Sepang.

Sunday will see 12 Class A and 16 Class B racers vying for the title in the PCCA, the former category for professional drivers, the latter non-professional. Azman will race in Class B. “Some Class B drivers come very close to the times set by the Class A drivers,” he added.

The car he will drive on Sunday, the Team Sime Darby GT3 Cup, omits driving aids such as ABS, traction control and servo-assisted brakes. It’s left-hand-drive, too. All the other cars on the track are basically similar save for their individual settings, such as camber, sway bars and tyre pressure, which each team is free to carry out to suit its driver’s driving styles.

“Settings are very important in racing,” said Azman. “0.1 of a bar in tyre pressure can make a difference of half a second.” Azman, who cites Ayrton Senna as his favourite racing driver, goes through the qualifying session today – here’s wishing him all the best!

Refreshing or Revolting: 2013 Nissan Sentra

Hot on the heels of the 2013 Pathfinder and 2013 Nissan Altima, the next-generation 2013 Nissan Sentra has finally made its debut this week. The new car shows off revised exterior and interior designs, which Nissan promises will offer “class-above style” compared to the rest of the segment, as well as the outgoing compact car. Below, we pick apart the Sentra’s redesign. Will this new look help the Sentra gain a stronger foothold in the cutthroat compact sedan class?

2013 Nissan Sentra front view 300x187 imageUndergoing a transformation much like the new Altima’s, the 2013 Sentra also grew in size compared to the previous generation. The redesigned compact is 2.3 inches longer and sits on a 0.6-inch longer wheelbase, though overall width is narrower by 1.2 inches. With the new dimensions, the car has a shorter front overhang, but the most obvious changes can be seen in the headlights, which feature the same kink seen on the new Altima.

The arrow-shaped headlights have an LED light strip on the bottom, and look much sleeker than the fat, squarish headlights on the outgoing car. The front grille is also dramatically different. Although it keeps the same basic trapezoidal shape, it appears much more pronounced as the sides have been pinched in more. The black-painted center on the outgoing car gives way to an all-chrome center, while the surrounding chrome frame stays in place. Foglight housings on the lower front fascia are also entirely new.

2013 Nissan Sentra side view 300x187 imageViewing the car from the side, the beltline appears to be lower, and a new character line connects the front fenders to the wraparound LED taillights in back. Chrome door handles replace the previous-gen car’s body-colored pieces, and chrome trim outlines the windows. The passenger door is also angled off, as is the rear passenger window behind the C-pillar. The new Sentra’s bubbly greenhouse has also been smooshed, giving it a lower and more aggressive-looking profile. Also visible from the side is an extended rear overhang, thanks to the car’s longer wheelbase.

The biggest changes out back are new taillights, which flank a more stretched out and rectangular rear end. The chrome bar that sits above the license plate surrounds has been elongated, and new reflectors on the outer edges of the lower rear fascia complete the changes.

2013 Nissan Sentra interior view 300x187 imageUpdates to the interior add to the Sentra’s renewed look and feel, with more upscale-looking materials used throughout the cabin. The center stack has received a touchup, with the HVAC vents relocating from the sides to above the central information display.

Do you think the 2013 Nissan Sentra has changed for the better? Will the enhanced look lure sales away from the likes of the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below.

Last week, reactions to the 2013 Land Rover LR2 were split down the middle. 02eclipse said, “Revolting. Not the worst SUV ever, but it’s not very good looking at all!”

On the other end of the spectrum, Jc said, “I actually like it; it’s all about the new headlights, and it looks pretty nice. The interior is a little too sophisticated, but the outside is really refreshing.”

Others couldn’t point out the differences, like alex, who said, “Wait, what’s different? It looks good, but what’s different?”

Toyota’s redesigned Avalon has taken the formerly dowdy model to the top of the class in terms of styling. Now, there is a rumor that a sports-tuned model is on the way.

According to a report from Autoblog, a trio of sporty Avalon sedans are heading to SEMA in October. Unnamed, Toyota officials told the publication that a sports-tuned model is under serious consideration to join the lineup next to the hybrid and V6 models.

The new Avalon already starts life with paddle shifters and a sports-mode programmed into the transmission to get the most out of the engine. It is a respectable engine for a front-wheel-drive sedan, as it is a 3.5 liter V6 that puts out 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.

According to Randy Stephens, the chief-engineer of the Kentucky-made and Michigan-developed Avalon, two of the three customized SEMA Avalons were modified in-house by Toyota. At least one of these two cars will be sporting an Australian-market TRD supercharger kit. This is apparently identical to the unit used on the Lotus Evora S.

Apparently these customized Avalons will be sedately-styled by SEMA standards. Toyota wants these vehicles to be relatively production-ready so that delays can be minimized if there is a strong public response. While the Avalon is currently about to hit dealerships, a performance model, if approved, would take a couple of years to be put on sale.

Don’t expect to see a supercharged Avalon on the dealership lots however, a production model would likely be much more relaxed. It would however likely sport a revised suspension setup, a more potently tuned drivetrain, and maybe even a revised steering system. The most noticeable changes would likely be the flashy sports upgrades to the exterior and seats.

It is also possible that these changes would make their way to a Lexus ES F-Sport model. The new 2013 ES is based on the Avalon, and Lexus is trying to expand its F-Sport range.

Thread of the Day: What Cars Would Fill Your Cumulative 400-hp Dream Garage?

When talking about our dream garages, we usually choose to fill them with high-end luxury cars and high-horsepower sports or muscle cars. The fantasy cars we pick often boast obscene power ratings and prices, but what if your dream garage was limited to a cumulative 400 hp?

2013 Chevrolet Spark left side 1 300x187 imageThat’s the question Motor Trend forum member Frisky_Dingo asks in today’s Thread of the Day. The rules are simple:

  • As many cars as you want, but a minimum of two
  • The cars can be new or old, and can be from any market
  • Manufacturer’s horsepower ratings – no modifications
  • No more than 400 hp combined

Some interesting combinations can be had with less than 400 hp. Here are just a few examples suggested around the office:

What cars would you park in your 400-hp dream garage? Share your choices in the comments below.

2012 Mazda2 left front1 150x150 image
2013 Mazda CX 5 51 150x150 image
2012 MX 5 Miata right front1 150x150 image

2012 FIat 500 right side 1 150x150 image
2012 Mini Cooper left front 1 150x150 image
2013 Chevrolet Spark left side 1 150x150 image

2013 Subaur BRZ left side 1 150x150 image
2011 smart fortwo Passion Cabriolet left front 1 150x150 image
2013 Porsche Boxter S 150x150 image

I’d take two—the Fiat 500 which I would use just to bop around town and do errands…and everybody would stare at it…women would think it’s cute. And then my Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited…a roomy, comfortable road vehicle to take on trips or go off road. Fiat: 101 hp; Jeep 285 hp…total 386 hp. The frosting on the cake is that both of these vehicles are Chrysler products so I’d have a 5 year/100K powertrain warranty, stronger than Ford, Toyota, and some others.

2012 VW Golf GTI because its practical and pretty fun for a FWD hatch. 2013 Subaru BRZ it’s RWD and has plenty of power for day to day driving. Exactly 400hp. The only sad thing would be that a new more powerful GTI is about a couple month away and Subaru is gonna introduce an STi version of it’s BRZ

Top 10 Vehicles With the Longest Range For Your Labor Day Road Trip

It’s Labor Day weekend, and for many of you that means a nice, long road trip. To some, road trips are about the journey, while others just want to get there. After bathroom breaks, nothing stands in the way of progress more than having to fuel up. For those individuals who want the fewest stops at the pump during their trip, we present to you the top 10 vehicles with the longest highway range.

A quick note before we begin: this list was compiled using the EPA’s “Miles on a Tank” metric. In the EPA’s words, this is “The distance the vehicle can go from a full tank…down to 90% empty.” We could’ve multiplied the highway mileage by fuel tank size, but the EPA’s Miles on a Tank number is probably more accurate for real driving, considering no one is going to willingly let their tank run dry for the sake of range.

Another quick note: some new-for-2013 vehicles like the Ford Fusion Hybrid or Energi, Ram 1500 with the V-6 and eight-speed auto, and Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec didn’t make the cut because their fuel economy numbers aren’t yet finalized. With that in mind, here we go.

2013 Lexus GS 450h front three quarters in motion 3 300x187 image10. 2013 Lexus GS 450h – 485 Miles: The new Lexus GS 450h hybrid is the first of many hybrids to make this list. It just edged out the two-wheel-drive Chevrolet Suburban to earn the number 10 spot, thanks to its 34-mpg highway rating and big 17.4- gallon fuel tank.

9. 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec 4Matic – 487 Miles: The all-wheel-drive ML350 Bluetec made it on this list thanks to its 240-hp, 455-lb-ft 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 and 24.6-gallon tank, which, combined with its 27-mpg highway rating, gives it an impressive 487-mile range.

8. 2013 Audi A6 2.0T/2013 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid/2013 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid (Tie) – 499 Miles: The Audi A6 made this list thanks to its pipsqueak of an engine, while the Porsche and VW SUV twins made it thanks to their respectable 24-mpg highway rating and 26.4-gallon fuel tank. The front-drive A6 is powered by 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making just 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a CVT.

7. 2013 Audi Q7 TDI – 523 Miles: The Audi Q7 TDI is the only seven-seater to make the cut. The Q7 TDI has a big fuel tank and 28 mpg highway rating to help it go the distance.

6. 2013 Mercedes-Benz S350 Bluetec/2013 Toyota Prius (Tie) – 536 Miles: Our tie for sixth place couldn’t be between two more different vehicles. One is a VIP private jet on wheels with a diesel engine, while the other is the bane of enthusiasts, a hybrid suited for basic commuter duty or as a fashion statement for C-list celebrities. One returns 31 mpg highway, while the other gets 48 mpg. Nevertheless, both earn their place in the number-six slot with a 536-mile range.

2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel front three quarter motion 300x187 image5. 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel/2013 Volkswagen Touareg TDI (Tie) – 546 Miles: It’s not surprising that the new Porsche Cayenne Diesel and VW Touareg TDI tied on this list since they’re mechanically identical. Both SUVs boast an identical 29-mpg highway estimate and have a 546-mile range.

4. 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid – 576 Miles: Just missing out on the bronze medal is the all-new Ford C-Max Hybrid. The C-Max Hybrid is the only minivan on this list, and made it not due to fuel tank size (it only has a 13.5-gallon tank), but thanks to its impressive 47-mpg highway rating.

3. 2012 Ford F-150 3.7L 4×4/2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI 6M (Tie) – 583 Miles: Well, look at that – our 2012 Car of Year and Truck of the Year tied for third place. The Passat earned its spot thanks to its 43-mpg highway rating and fuel-sipping 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4. The four-wheel-drive F-150, on the other hand, made it thanks to its relatively fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V-6, and its massive 36-gallon fuel tank. (Rear-drive models only have 22-gallon tanks).

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE front end in motion 300x187 image2. 2013 Lexus ES 300h – 626 Miles: We may not have loved the new Lexus ES 300h when we drove it in our First Test, but we can certainly respect its 626-mile range. The Lexus does it thanks to its hybrid drivetrain, 39-mpg highway rating and 17.4-gallon fuel tank.

1. 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid – 627 Miles: It may not be the most thrilling choice for a road trip vehicle, but the Toyota Camry Hybrid beat out the competition with its 627-mile range. The Camry Hybrid managed to earn the gold medal for long-distance cruising thanks to its large fuel tank and 39-mpg range.

The Camry might have the longest range on this list, but which above vehicle would you rather drive on a road trip? Sound off in the comments below.
