Identical Twins? 2014 Mazda6 and Takeri Concept Designs Compared

Concept cars allow designers to push the boundaries of automotive design. Some concepts are so wild, automakers must make several changes before a concept-inspired production car design is finalized. That’s not the case with Mazda, which is comparing the design of the Takeri concept and the 2014 Mazda6, and hints that we’ll see more production-car-like concepts from the automaker in the future.

While the Japanese automaker has showcased a few crazy concepts in years past, it’s most recent concepts more closely resemble production cars. It’s a trend that appears to be working, as Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda’s European Chief Designer, believes the new Mazda6 was so well-received because it didn’t deviate far from the Takeri concept. Although the Takeri is fractionally lower, longer, and wider than the new Mazda6, the proportions and stance are practically identical.

The same goes for many previous Honda concepts and the Mazda CX-5 crossover, which almost entirely mimics the Minagi concept. While some automakers believe in showcasing daring and avant garde concepts, Birtwhistle sees it another way: “…if we had taken the route of our competitors and created a coupe or convertible, we certainly wouldn’t have had anything to measure it by and learn from.”
