Tata Motors seeks to build Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles in Saudi Arabia

Reuters reports that Tata Motors is exploring avenues in which the Indian company can start assembling Jaguars and Land Rovers in Saudi Arabia. The report, which originates from Autocar India, also states that the plant could be located next to the Middle Eastern kingdom’s new aluminium smelter.

The report also quotes Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata, who said, “This smelter could make the production of aluminium in Saudi Arabia very competitive. So taking a really long-term view, if we put an assembly plant there with a large press shop, given our commitment to aluminium in our products, we could have an interesting business case which we are examining today.”

The smelter is a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Maaden) and Alcoa Inc. Production is scheduled to start in 2013. One major advantage the Saudi Arabian industry enjoys is the low electricity prices, which results from low natural gas prices. Currently, the Islamic kingdom does not have an existing auto industry.
