The first Pope to prioritize environmental issues, His Holiness Benedict XVI now has a Popemobile St. Francis of Assisi would approve of.
Hand-delivered by Renault Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn to the Pope at his summer resident in Castel Gandolfo, the emissions-free Kangoo Maxi Z.E has been outfitted to meet the Pope’s security needs by French coachbuilder Gruau. A second version has also been delivered to the Corps of Gendarmerie in Vatican City.
More green than speedy, the large van is powered by a 60-hp electric motor, with a range of 170 km (105 miles). Each car ran seat up to four people in separate chairs, while the Kangoo also features an opening room, fully removable rear side windows and hinged rear doors with electrically folding stairs for easy access.
“This donation to His Holiness is a means for Renault to reaffirm its strong and durable commitment to sustainable development and respect for the environment,” said Ghosn.
A generous gift from Renault, and a clever PR stunt, it’s a far cry from the Enzo that Ferrari build for Benedict’s predecessor.
