GM’s OnStar Services Heading to Mexico, Available in 2013

Just last year, OnStar expanded on a national scale by making services available to non-GM owners, but it’s also continuing to grow on a global scale. The tech makes its first entry into the Latin American market through Mexico, where it will become available sometime in 2013.

The system will offer all the usual services such as automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle assistance, vehicle diagnostics, hands-free calling, and roadside assistance. While OnStar won’t be the only telematics system offered in Mexico, human interaction is what OnStar reps believe it will set it apart.

Originally launched in 1996, GM’s OnStar services have 5.5 million subscribers in the U.S. In Canada, OnStar was first made available in 1998 and there are now 428,000 subscribers. The Chinese market Initially exposed to OnStar in 2009, China now has 450,000 subscribers.

“We are confident these services will be quite popular with Mexican consumers,” said Ernesto M. Hernandez, president and managing director of General Motors Mexico, in a press release. Information on which vehicles will offer OnStar and pricing has yet to be released.
