Ford is gaining a lot of momentum these days. Not only has the American automaker produced 350-million vehicles, but it’s Ford Focus compact has sold more this year than its closest competitor, the Toyota Corolla.
If this trend continues through the rest of the year the Focus could snatch the sales crown away from the Toyota Corolla, making it the first time in years that an American company had the best-selling passenger vehicle.
Currently, Ford has sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide for the first half of this year, which is 5.5% more what Toyota has sold so far.
However, the situation that Toyota is in mirrors the companies situation last year. At this point in 2011, Toyota was behind the Focus in sales as well, but in the end, had 100,000 more units sold than the Focus. Similarly, the Japanese compact is picking up momentum this year, reporting a 37% increase in sales in the US during the month of July.
Ford is counting on its international ‘One Ford’ strategy for sales, as the Focus is sold in over 100 countries, which has been working in the blue ovals favor.
Time will tell if Toyota can reclaim the title with the Corolla, or if Ford will have the best selling vehicle in the world in 2012.
